Spring 2021 Virtual Exhibit: Pope Francis Proclaims
鈥淵ear of Saint Joseph鈥
What you will find here and why
With the Apostolic Letter Patris corde (With a Father鈥檚 Heart), Pope Francis recalls the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church by proclaiming a 鈥淵ear of Saint Joseph,鈥 extending from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021.
The Holy Father writes that in Saint Joseph, 鈥淛esus saw the tender love of God,鈥 the one that helps us accept our weakness, because 鈥渋t is through鈥 and despite 鈥渙ur fears, our frailties, and our weakness鈥 that most divine designs are realized. Saint Joseph is 鈥渃ourageously and firmly proactive.鈥 It is as if God were repeating to us through him: 鈥淒o not be afraid!鈥 (4). Patris corde聽highlights 鈥渢he creative courage鈥 of Saint Joseph, which 鈥渆merges especially in the way we deal with difficulties.鈥
鈥淭he carpenter of Nazareth,鈥 explains the Pope, 鈥渨as able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting in divine providence.鈥 He had to deal with 鈥渢he concrete problems鈥 his family faced, problems faced by other families in the world, and especially those of migrants. In this sense, Saint Joseph is 鈥渢he guardian of Jesus and Mary, and cannot 鈥渂e other than the guardian of the whole Church鈥 (5).
