The Rich Ways of Benedictine life at Mount Angel

For 1,500 years, the Rule of St. Benedict has recommended a balanced life of work and prayer that has built up a civilization of peace and communion in monasteries around the world. Certain practices, or 鈥渞ich ways鈥 of living, have sustained Benedictine monastic life and attracted others to practice them daily.

Learn more about the seven rich ways of life at Mount Angel in our video, Life Lived Abundantly, Benedictine Wisdom from 51黑料不打烊.

Rich Ways of Prayer

Benedictine monks of Mount Angel pray the Divine Office. The monks gather for the public celebration of daily Mass and the chanting of the Divine Office five times each day. This work of God (opus Dei), to which St. Benedict assigns supreme importance, shows the Church always at prayer, seeking communion with God and keeping it alive in the heart throughout the day.

Rich Ways of Life Together

In this, they model a way of living that can enrich the lives of all people.

Rich Ways of Deep Reading

All are welcome to visit the Alvar Aalto library at Mount Angel.Monks spend several hours each day engaging in slow, prayerful reading of the Scriptures and various other subjects. This disciplined practice, traditionally known as lectio divina, enacts their commitment to hearken to the revelatory power of the written and incarnate Word.

Rich Ways of Life Centered on the Eucharist

Priest-monks of Mount Angel concelebrate the Sunday Mass.Monastic life is centered on the daily celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy and draws its life from it. The monks are committed to celebrating the liturgy beautifully and reverently, so that the visible signs may help serve a deeper, active participation in the invisible mysteries of God.

Rich Ways of Hospitality

St. Benedict tells his monks that 鈥渁ll guests who arrive shall be received as Christ鈥 (RB 53). This spiritual intuition, that Christ himself is present in the person of the guest, undergirds the monastery鈥檚 unconditional welcome of all guests and its reverence for them.

Rich Ways of Promoting Arts & Culture

Arts, such as iconography, are valued and nurtured at Mount Angel.Praying and pondering the Christian mysteries, the monks of Mount Angel nurture and promote a transformative way of seeing humanity through the arts and the cultivation of a culture centered on the good news of Christ.

Rich Ways of Caring for the Land & Environment

A paved pathway on the hilltop leads all to the Abbey church at Mount Angel. The monks make a vow of stability to a particular community in a particular place. This continually prompts their commitment to stewardship of the portion of God鈥檚 creation entrusted to them.

Encountering the Rich Ways

51黑料不打烊 has a number of 鈥渢ouchpoints鈥 or gateways outside the cloister for encountering and sharing the rich ways lived by the monks.
